Giveaway: 5 boxes of General Mills Cereal review

Closed: the winner is Marci from http://ajoyfulheartandsoul.blogspot.com/

As I am trying to eat better and take care of my body we are making some changed in what we eat.  We are adding more whole grain to our diet.  The Dietary Guidelines recommend choosing products with a whole grain listed as the first ingredient. Did you know every General Mills cereal with the white check has more whole grain than any other single ingredient with the same great taste.   Look on box and you will see “whole grain” as a part of the first ingredient on the ingredient list, indicating that whole grain is the first and most prevalent ingredient.
According to Dr. Travis Stork, emergency room physician and host of “The Doctors,” identifying whole grain products can be challenging. Shoppers can look for nutritional cues on the front of the box, but they need to read the ingredient list to know if they are getting enough whole grain. Ingredient lists detail ingredients in order of prevalence, and if the words “whole grain” are followed by a grain like wheat or oats, it means the food contains more whole grain than any other single ingredient.

Dr. Stork has some additional recommendations to help you include whole grain easily into your diet. They include:

  • Start Early! The Dietary Guidelines recommend people get at least 48 grams of whole grain in their daily diets. Get a jump-start on the day’s nutrition by incorporating whole grain into your morning routine. For instance, when choosing cereal make sure whole grain is listed as the first ingredient. One easy choice is cereal with the white check, which have more whole grain than any other single ingredient.                                            .
  • Make Simple Swaps. Choose whole grain versions of the foods you love. Great options include whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread or even whole grain crackers. Also, try different types of whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice as a side dish at dinner or popcorn, which is a whole grain, for a snack.                                                                                        .
  • Don’t Judge a Food by Its Cover. The front of food packages provide good nutritional cues, but don’t forget to read the ingredients and check the nutrition label and side labels for additional health information. Cereals with the white check even include the amount of whole grain per serving on packaging.
Fast Lane for Whole Grain Game:

Check out General Mills new online educational game  “Fast Lane for Whole Grain.  This game was development to help you with choosing whole grains.  You can navigate virtual grocery store aisles and identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient.  You can also enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 General Mills cereals with the white check.

Make a commitment to add more whole grain to your diet by simply pouring a bowl of cereal with the white check including Cheerios®, Lucky Charms®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch®, Honey Nut Cheerios®and Total®.

We made the commitment to switch and my kids have never been healthier.  I they did not even notice that we had made the switch.  They just see the same cereals we have always enjoyed eaten.

God Gave Us Two; Book Review

God Gave Us Two is a book in a series of books by Lisa Tawn Bergren.  The First book is God Gave Us You (click here for my review).

God Gave Us Two - Lisa Tawn BergrenGod Gave Us Two is a delightful fictional children's book. The art work by Laura J. Bryant is beautifully illustrated. The story starts out with a Little Cub, a polar bear, not wanting to wake up, so she tells Mama to take the new baby to church. Mama reminds Little Cub the new baby is still inside her tummy. Little Cub also ask Mama Why they need a new baby? Mama has a quick response, she reminds Little Cub " they don't need a new baby, they want a new baby like they wanted her".

Throughout the story Mama reminds Little Cub "God gave us you.  Now he's given us two."  Mama and Papa tell Little Cub how much fun she will have being a big sister.  They also talk about whether  Little Cub will have a little sister or a little brother (they don't know the gender of the baby).  Little Cub tries to sit on her Mama's lap, but Mama's lap is getting smaller and smaller.  Finally, Little Cub goes to her grandparents house to wait for new of the new baby.  Little Cub and her grandparents go fishing and bake cookies as they wait to find out if the baby is a boy or girl.

I don't want to spoil the ending so you will have to read the book to find out if Little Cub will have a baby brother or sister.

God Gave Us Two come in hardcover, but I wold have like it in a board book (my little ones rip pages sometimes).  I would recommend reading the ending to the book before you buy it.

I really enjoyed reading God Gave Us Two to my two youngest children. However, it is too long for Little Man to sit while I read the whole story.   Mare Bear is older, so she can sit while I read it to her.  This book is great to read to a child that is becoming a big brother or sister.   I wish I would have had this book when I was pregnant with Little Man, I could have read it to Mare Bear.  This book reminds older siblings that each child is "wanted" and a gift from God.

I like reading God Gave Us Two to my children and reminding them how much I wanted each of them. My favorite parts of the book is when Papa tells Little Cub, we all have the same maker (God), but each one of us is different.  Each one of my children are different, and we celebrate those differences.  This book's positive message of how God chooses each child for each family, and a story I think every child should hear.

You can also check out my review of some of Lisa Tawn Bergren other books. God Gave Us Two or Mercy Come Morning.

You can also check out more books by Lisa Tawn Bergren or other authors published by Water Brook Multnomah

Makers of Memories Foundation

Makers of MemoriesDid you know: More than three million children experience domestic violence in the U.S. each year.
The effect domestic violence has on children and later the adults who were impacted as children, is devastating. So much so that UNICEF calls it "one of the most damaging, unaddressed human rights violations in the world today".
It is a sad fact, that most people do not want to think or talk about.
Makers of Memorits Foundation is trying to change that. They want society to see that domestic violence is a human rights violation. They want to end the cycle of domestic violence and give support to the children and adults that were affected as children.

Check out their website click here or to "like" Makers of Memories Foundation click here.

Shifting Perspectives at the Dublin Arts Council

This made me smile. It also made me cry happy tears. I want people to look past Mare Bear's Rett synrome and see her as a 3rd grade, 8 year old, girl scout, swimmer, sister, daughter, beautiful, smart, happy, excited, opinionated, playful, silly, cute, sleepy, sneaky, dancer, lovable, darling, hopeful, dreamer, Christian... Little Girl.
